Central America including Mexico
Central America includes countries such as Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama. Central America is one of the most vibrant places in the world to visit. If we include Mexico, it consists of lush jungles, rainforests, and desert plains. Please check Smart traveller, if there is a Do Not Travel warning, that specific country is not covered.
Medical
Mexico has without a doubt the best food in the world; tacos and burritos everyday – who wouldn’t find that appetizing? Moving into technical Central America the food consists largely of rice and beans with meat, the food is simple but delicious and affordable.
Enjoy the Caribbean
Central America is situated on the sliver of land between North and South America. This area of land is fronted on both sides by two oceans. In the West is the Pacific Ocean, and in the East is the Caribbean Ocean. The Caribbean Ocean is famous for its turquoise and clear warm waters. Belize is one of the first countries you enter from Mexico. This country’s native language is English, in contrast to the rest of Central America, where they speak Spanish.
In the Caribbean you can chance to take a number of fishing expeditions on the shore in the crystal-clear waters
The Mayan Civilization
Next to Belize is Guatemala, the most populated country in Central America with around 16 million people living there. The capital of Guatemala is Guatemala City. Throughout Guatemala are many ancient Mayan cities that make great places to visit, particularly if you are backpacking.
Scuba diving
While in Honduras you might go scuba diving, there are a number of amazing reefs around the coastline, such as Roatan reef. In keeping with the tradition of visiting Mayan ruins while in Central America, the Chopan Ruinas make a great visit if you’re in Honduras. Likewise, El Salvador has the Joya de Ceren ruins. In El Salvador you can also visit the Santa Ana Volcano.
Pura Vida!
Probably the most visited country in Central America is Costa Rica. The Costa Rican motto is pura vida – meaning pure life. Costa Rica is famed for its lush jungles, wildlife parks and abundance of nature. The capital of Costa Rica actually has quite a lot to offer in terms of multi-culturalism; you would have never thought you’d find a yum cha restaurant in the middle of San Pedro!
In Costa Rica, you can also go in wander of the famed stone spheres. Who crafted these spheres, humans, aliens? Maybe we are aliens! Anyhow, there are a number of stone spheres laid out all over the Costa Rican countryside. The cities of Costa Rica have a lot to offer, as do the seaside towns.
Panamania
If you travel from Costa Rica to the South, you will cross the border into Panama. Panama is most well-known for Panama City, and within Panama City the Panama Canal. This canal was first built in 1914 and has since expanded. Panama also has incredible beaches, particularly around the island of Bocas del Toro.
Bocas del Toro is a party island with some beautiful coastlines but if you’re tired from travelling around Central America and need a more relaxed experience, you can head from Bocas del Toro to the island of Bastimentos. Bastimentos is a very relaxed island with warm and friendly locals; there are no roads here and only a couple of hostels.
It’s the perfect place to unwind. You’ll find a number of locations particularly attractive – like the coffee and chocolate house located a short walk through the jungle from the main area of Bastimentos. Or a longer walk through the jungle, which can prove quite exciting, you’ll come across the Red Frog Beach – possibly one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
The country we haven’t mentioned yet is Nicaragua. Nicaragua has so much to offer the budding traveller and is a favoured destination for young people. Its affordability and attractive locale have made it a more and more popular travel destination in recent years.
