    Medical Condition

    An existing medical condition is any medical condition which:

    At the time you buy your policy is:
    • chronic; or, 
    • displaying symptoms; or, 
    • under investigation; or, 
    • pending follow-up, consultation, treatment or surgery; or where these are recommended or planned; 
    • or metastatic; 
    • or terminal; or
    in the six months prior to the time you buy your policy there has been:
    • treatment by a medical practitioner; or 
    • medication prescribed; or 
    • surgery.

    Snow Sports

    If you are participating in Snow sports on your trip you need to add this option to be covered.

    By selecting this option, you’ll be charged an additional premium. You can uncheck this box if you do not wish to purchase this additional cover.

    Snow sports are defined as Snow skiing and snowboarding on and off piste, back country skiing and snowboarding, snowmobiling, tobogganing, cross-country skiing, telemark skiing.

    $0 Excess

    By selecting this option, you’ll be charged an additional premium. You can uncheck this box if you don't want to reduce your excess. Different excess options are available when you "Get a Quote".

    Variable excess option An excess is the amount that is deducted from your claim payout. A standard excess of $250 applies to most claims. By selecting this option, you have changed this amount to $0.

    Cruise

    Cruising is covered as standard. If the cruise only stops in one country, just select that country.

    If the cruise only visits stops within Australia, make sure you select the ‘Cruising – Australian Waters’ option and NOT just Australia.

    If you get sick aboard a cruise while traveling under one of our international policies, we can offer overseas medical cover on board, including if you contract Coronavirus during the trip. Make sure you’re following all relevant government and official advice. All policy terms, limits and exclusions apply, and you should be aware there are things we don’t cover, such as your cruise being cancelled by the provider due to an epidemic or pandemic.

    SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19 event has now been classified as a Pandemic. There is a General exclusion for a loss arising from an epidemic or pandemic. This exclusion applies to all sections including Medical and Cancellation for policies purchased from the 1st of December 2019 to the current date. 
    If you purchased your policy before the 30th of November and your policy number starts with TI, OS or WD you may be covered for medical expenses if you contracted the virus and also additional expenses for quarantine protocols. You will need to speak with QBE/nib emergency assistance on 1300 555 017 to confirm as claims are based on a case by case scenario. If you are already overseas please contact the 24/7 international assistance team immediate or lodge a claim.      

    7 Embargos are in place

    • Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) - policies purchased after 5:00pm AEDT on Wednesday, 23 January 2020 will not be covered for this event.
    • Hong Kong Protests - policies purchased after 12:00am (AEST) on 7 August 2019 will not be covered for this event.
    • Bali Volcano - Policies purchased since September 2017 will not be covered for this event.
    • British Airways Strike - policies purchased after 9:00am (AEST) on 26 August 2019 will not be covered for this event.

    British Airway Strikes - 26 August 2019

    British Airways have notified travellers that there will be significant delays and cancellations impacting flights on 9, 10 and 27 September 2019.

    As this event is now anticipated, there is no cover for claims arising from this strike action for policies purchased after 9:00am (AEST) on 26 August 2019.

    If your travel plans are affected

    1. Contact your airline, cruise or tour operator to check if tourist services are affected.

    2. If you need to change your travel arrangements, contact your airline, cruise company or travel agent for assistance in the first instance. Refer to your policy wording for more detail or contact our Customer Service Centre to discuss your plans before making any changes.

    3. Injured or ill? Contact the emergency assistance team as soon as possible. Their details are listed on your Certificate of Insurance.

    4. In the event of a claim covered by your policy, you must do everything you can to minimise and reduce the cost of the claim and provide all supporting documentation of the event and expenses incurred.     Hong Kong Protests - 20 August 2019

    Important information about cover on travel insurance policies issued by nib Travel Services (Australia) Pty Ltd.

    Demonstrations in Hong Kong have been ongoing since June, including flight cancellations occurring from 5 August 2019.

    News of disruption to travel services has been widely reported, and subsequent disruption is deemed to be a continuation of this same movement.

    There is no cover for claims arising from these events for policies purchased after 12:00am (AEST) on 7 August 2019.

    If your travel plans are affected

    1. Contact your airline, cruise or tour operator to check if tourist services are affected. 
    2. If you need to change your travel arrangements, contact your airline, cruise company or travel agent for assistance in the first instance. Refer to your policy wording for more detail or contact our Customer Service Centre to discuss your plans before making any changes.

    Super Typhoon Hagibis 

    Rapidly intensifying from a tropical storm to a Category 5-equivalent super typhoon over the past few days, Super Typhoon Hagibis has now been forecast to approach the south-central coast of Japan. This event is now widely reported in the media, and any policies that may offer cover for the storm will no longer offer cover for claims that arise from the storm for policies purchased after: 

    • 10:00pm UTC/GMT on Monday 7 October 2019
    • 9:00am AEDT on Tuesday 8 October 2019
    • 11:00am NZDT on Tuesday 8 October 2019

    Taal Volcano

    (Advice as at 1:00pm AEDT on Tuesday 14 January 2020)

    Taal Volcano in The Philippines has erupted, spreading volcanic ash clouds in a wide area around the region. The eruption has caused the disruption of flights at Manila airport and The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has requested a total evacuation within a 17km radius around the volcano.

    This volcanic activity is now widely reported in the media and any policies that may offer cover for the volcanic activity will no longer offer cover for claims that arise from any associated volcanic activity for policies purchased after:

    • 9:30am UTC/GMT on Sunday, 12 January 2020 
    • 8:30pm AEDT on Sunday, 12 January 2020
    • 10:30pm NZDT on Sunday, 12 January 2020

    Jetstar Industrial Action

    The Australian Federation of Air Pilots and media outlets including The Sydney Morning Herald have reported that Jetstar staff are to conduct a series of strikes on beginning on 13, 14 and 15 December 2019. This event is now widely reported in the media and any policies that may offer cover for the industrial action will no longer offer cover for claims that arise from any associated industrial action for policies purchased after:
    • 1:00pm UTC/GMT on Monday 9 December 2019
    • 12:00am AEDT on Tuesday 10 December 2019 
    • 2:00am NZDT on Tuesday 10 December 2019

    Volcanic eruption of Mount Agung, Bali - update 13 May, 2019

    Please note this advice is an update, following the previous update made by QBE travel on 06 February 2019.

    Important information about cover on your QBE travel insurance policy

    An embargo for policies issued by QBE was put in place in September 2017 when the eruption was first anticipated and remains in place. This means there is no cover for claims arising from any volcanic activity of Mount Agung for QBE policies purchased after 14:00 AEST on Thursday 21 September 2017.     • It is considered safe to travel in Bali outside of the Hazard Zone
     

    Tropical Storm Dorian

    After passing through the U.S Virgin Islands, Tropical Storm Dorian is now expected to make landfall along Florida’s east coast.
    As this event is now being reported in the media, there is no cover for claims arising from this storm for policies purchased after 6:00pm (NZST) on 29 August 2019.

    Ryanair Strikes

    Important information about cover on travel insurance policies issued by nib Travel Services (Australia) Pty Ltd.

    Media outlets such as The Guardian and BBC have reported that Ryanair pilots are to conduct a series of strikes on 18, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27 and 29 September 2019.
    As this event is now anticipated, there is no cover for claims arising from this strike action for policies purchased after 2:00pm (NZST) on 5 September 2019.

    Thomas Cook 

    Over the past few weeks, the financial viability of British travel operator Thomas Cook had become very uncertain. Thomas Cook UK Plc and associated UK entities have now entered Compulsory Liquidation and are now under the control of the Official Receiver. This event is now widely reported in the media, and any policies that may offer cover for the risk of financial default of any nature will no longer offer cover for claims that arise from the company becoming insolvent or falling into administration for policies purchased after:

    • 1:30am UTC/GMT on Monday 23 September 2019
    • 11:30am AEST on Monday 23 September 2019
    • 1:30pm NZST on Monday 23 September 2019

    Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)

    (Advice as at 5:00pm AEDT on Thursday 23 January 2020)

    Over 400 patients hospitalized for pneumonia China have tested positive for a novel (new) coronavirus (2019-nCoV). In response, Chinese authorities have shut down Wuhan’s entire transport network, including bus, rail, ferry and airport. Isolated cases have also occurred in neighbouring countries and the USA. 
    With the Chinese New Year travel season already underway, disruption to travel is expected to increase. This outbreak is now widely reported in the media and by authorities such as the World Health Organisation (WHO). Any policies that may offer cover for risks associated with contagious disease will no longer cover claims arising from any event related to coronavirus (2019-nCoV) for travel to and/or from China on policies purchased after:
    • 6:00am UTC/GMT on Wednesday, 23 January 2020
    • 5:00pm AEDT on Wednesday, 23 January 2020
    • 7:00pm NZDT on Wednesday, 23 January 2020
