A lot of people will enter Mexico via the worlds largest city, with 23 million inhabitants, Mexico City. I did and opted to stay in the Zocalo, the cities principle plaza. Adjacent is partially excavated remains of the Templo Mayor (Great Temple), the centre of religious life in the old Aztec capital, and an adjoining museum displays items that testify to the splendour of that civilization. Surrounded by many excavated ruins and places of historical significance.

    Smart Traveller Mexico

Travellers should pay attention to hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette. You should consult a doctor or the nearest hospital immediately if you develop flu-like symptoms. Travellers may be asked to declare their state of health at Mexico’s international airports prior to departure.

The New Zealand Government has implemented enhanced border control arrangements. These are applied to passengers arriving from Mexico displaying flu-like symptoms and members of their travelling party or those sitting in adjoining rows (including passengers who are symptom-free).

These measures apply to passengers transiting through New Zealand to Australia.

The Australian Embassy in Mexico City has returned to normal operations.

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in drug-related gang violence. Although this violence is not normally targeted at foreigners, foreign residents and tourists have been among the victims.

Avoid all large public gatherings, protests and demonstrations as they may turn violent.

The hurricane season is June to November when landslides, mudslides and flooding may occur.

The city is full of awesome museums and sites to see. The easiest way I found to see them all is to jump on and off the big red open-top bus. This runs around most of the city and is affordable and easy. Another must do is, head out to the vast ruins of Tenochtitlan.

    Tenochtitlan

From Mexico, I headed south-east to Oaxaca. it’s another great place to get mad cultural both by looking at the museums and architecture and by sampling its regional food.

Again, I found accommodation in the Zocalo. With its numerous eateries, cafes and bars it is the perfect place to do relax and take everything in!

The Pacific coast was the next stop, and the thriving town and surf hot spot of Puerto Escondido. The waves were big and pros such as Beth Hamilton were there to ride the ‘Mexico Pipeline’.

A short cheap bus ride east down the road is the quiet village of Mazunte, in the past a base for the (now illegal) turtle and turtle egg trade. Its now a great place to go swimming with turtles and dolphins, or hop around the rocks fishing, then take your catch to the bar on the beach and they’ll cook it up for you.

    Mexico travel insurance information

The Australian government and Smart Traveller recommend appropriate insurance information if you are travelling overseas and to ensure that you are properly covered with comprehensive travel insurance.
The cost of medical, dental and let alone the inconvenience of the lost luggage can ruin your holiday.
