Activities in New Caledonia

Extras

Hiking

Hike into the interior. Botanical excursions leave from Noumeà through the forest of Mount Koghi are also available.

Water Activities

Involve yourself in some quality snorkelling and diving in marine reserves and around sunken shipwrecks. Favourite sites include around Nouméa, Ilot Maître, the Amédée Lighthouse Reserve, the Prony Needle, the Tenia Horn, La Dieppoise (Royal Navy shipwreck) and the Fault and the Hienghene Reef.

Horse Riding

Tours are organised from Nouméa, Dumbea, La Foa, Bourail, Thio and the Koné villages. These vary from novice rides to major expeditions crossing the mountain range, mustering cattle and camping in the mountains.

Boat Cruise

Tour in a traditional Melanesian outrigger canoe or venture out in a glass bottom boat and see the wonders of the sea. Kayaking is also readily available for hire.

Windsurfing

The Bay of Anse Vata and Côte Blanche, both in Nouméa, are the most popular locations for windsurfing. International competitions such as the Trophée des Alizés attract some of the world's top competitors to the magnificent wind surf location.

Fishing

Find yourself on a fishing expedition of a life time. The coral barrier reef off Nouméa is excellent for underwater spearfishing, as are waters around the Loyalty Islands. Ouvéa Island's lagoon is home to an abundance of marine life. Freshwater fishing is great at Yaté Lake, open January to October.
