Located in central Asia Afghanistan is considered to be the crossroads between East and West. For centuries the focal point of a major trade route and the bringing together of different cultures.
The Khyber a famous mountain pass for traders over time which connects Afghanistan with Pakistan and is the road to Europe. More recently this was a popular route for Australians travelling to Europe on the start of their lifetime adventure.

Since the Russian invasion of Afghanistan, the country has been in turmoil with ongoing wars and terrorist activity. At this stage, it is a country to be avoided.

You are strongly advised you not to travel to Afghanistan because of the extremely dangerous security situation and the very high threat of terrorist attack.

Deterioration insecurity in the provinces surrounding Kabul means that travel by road from Kabul by foreigners has been restricted by the Afghan Government to those with armed security. You should only travel in secure transport with close protection, using reputable local drivers and guides.

There is a continuing high threat of kidnapping against Westerners, including journalists and those working for NGOs and international organisations. In 2008, there were more than 300 kidnapping incidents in Afghanistan.
